Meet the volunteers

My name is Carole Shields, I have been volunteering at 3D Drumchapel for almost 5 years. My son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and severe and complex learning difficulties, which left me unable to work. I had some spare time to fill and wanted to meet different people, use and improve my skills and put something back into my local community. I applied to help out in the creche at 3D and was delighted when they accepted me. I love playing with the children getting to know them, gaining their trust and having fun, in addition to giving their parents confidence to leave them with us. I also help out with reception and keep the database up to date.

I feel valued all of the time by the staff at 3D, they always voice their appreciation. They have put me through many training programmes, for example First Aid, Food Hygiene and Child Protection, all of which enhance my skills. Through volunteering, I have met lots of new people whether it be families, fellow volunteers or staff members. I am fortunate to be part of the ''3D Family''.

The volunteer coordinator at 3D always makes sure we are okay, she will listen to any problems we have (even personal ones) with genuine concern, organises fun get-togethers , team building activities, to mention but a few. I never feel pressured if I am unable to attend, but I enjoy it so much this is a rare occurrence.
